Exclusive South African Tasting of Whalehaven and Idiom Wines at Cru’78 in London

On Thursday, 25 June at 18:00, Amathus Drinks’ Cru’78 Wine & Charcuterie Bar in Maida Vale, London, will host an evening showcasing world-class South African wines with their own unique interpretation being inspired by Burgundy, Tuscany and Bordeaux.

Hosted by Idiom’s proprietor Roberto Bottega, the tasting will showcase some of South Africa’s most acclaimed wines from the cool-climate regions of Stellenbosch and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, highlighting the unique expressions of the two vineyards owned by the Bottega family.

The journey begins in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with the 97-point Whalehaven Seascape Reserve Chardonnay. The wine was the only South African wine selected for Decanter’s Top 100 Wines of the Year in the January 2026 edition and also earned a place among the Top 10 wines at the Chardonnay du Monde Challenge in Burgundy. Alongside it, Whalehaven’s elegant Cloudscape Pinot Noir will showcase the freshness, vibrancy and finesse for which the region has become renowned.

The journey then moves to southern Stellenbosch, where abundant sunshine and cooling Atlantic influences create wines that marry richness with refinement. Featured wines include Idiom’s award-winning Viognier and Semillon, benchmark examples of textured, expressive white wines, followed by Idiom’s Sangiovese and Primitivo, reflecting the Bottega family’s Italian heritage and longstanding passion for Italian varietals.

The evening concludes with a comparison of Idiom’s celebrated red blends: the category-leading Cape Blend, driven by Pinotage, and the 95-point Bordicon, led by Cabernet Sauvignon. Together, they showcase two of the defining red varieties that have shaped Stellenbosch’s reputation for red wine excellence.
