It is difficult to believe that the 2022 harvest is almost done! Although the late-ripening grapes are still in the vineyard, first impressions are that the other harvested grapes arrived in excellent condition in the cellar, even prompting a WhatsApp from our normally reserved winemaker Reino. “Wish I could take a picture of the smells in the winery now”, he messaged, “Viognier and Pinotage at the top of their respective ferments – a melange of tropical sweet notes and red berry fruits. Absolutely beautiful”. What a priceless comment!

Those of you who look forward to attending our events at Idiom will have noticed that our annual ITALIAN FESTIVAL did not take place this year during its regular 1st weekend of March timeslot.

Part of the attraction and success of the festival over the years is the invitation that we extend to the visiting Italian winemakers to come and share their regional stories and insight with our guests. Unfortunately, travel between Italy and South Africa was hugely disrupted by Covid and borders were not fully opened until a week ago. A mandatory 10 day quarantine period meant it was not feasible for visiting winemakers to attend. Add to that other Covid related delays and ongoing shortages of packaging and stock from Italy and it made more sense to postpone the return of the full Italian Festival at Idiom to March 2023.

In the meantime we are planning 2 Italian themed events:

 A fun LONG TABLE HARVEST LUNCH AT IDIOM 
on the public holiday 21 March 2022
– similar to the very successful one we held last year –
and
– a more elaborate ITALIAN WINTER WINE WEEKEND event
on 28/29 May 2022 (bookings open after Easter
after our return from Vinitaly in Verona)
