Join us for an evening Aperitivo Campania style. Italian Consul, Emanule Pollio, hails from Sorrento near Naples. He takes us on a cultural and heritage tour of his native region revealing some of its secrets. Claudio Uccello, the guest chef from Fumo in Pretoria, is also from Naples and will be creating some delightful tastes of Campanian food which will be served with the wines from visiting producer Feudi di S.Gregorio.

Mineral, intense and aromatic, volcanic wines are all the rage! Etna’s trendy, elegant red Nerello Mascalese variety now has to share the limelight with the indigenous white variety Carricante. Both grapes produce particularly memorable and sapid wines on Etna’s volcanic soils. Carricante’s acidity resembles a dry Riesling while Nerello Mascalese has a finesse that can be likened to Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir. 

Export Manager Francesca Festa joins us all the way from Irpinia, where Campania’s benchmark Feudi di S.Gregorio winery is located. We discuss Campania’s importance in the Italian fine wine world and find out where Feudi sells its wine. We continue discussing volcanic soils and find out how close their vineyards are to dormant Mount Vesuvius, which last erupted in 1944.

Friuli is still a hidden secret when it comes to Italian wines. A region that is renowned for its white varieties, the best vineyards are located in the Colli Orientali (Eastern Hills) appellation on the slopes of the Julian Alps near the border with Slovenia. Sauvignon Blanc from this region has been doing very well in South Africa, and we taste three examples from Bidoli, Tunella and Livio Felluga.

A more casual presentation by Francesca Festa of Feudi di S. Gregorio. Think Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano and the rest of the beautiful Amalfi Coast and you are in the right part of Italy. Aromatic, delicate yet flavourful, and decidedly mineral, these are wines that exude a sense of place.
