ITALIAN FESTIVAL AT IDIOM – 2024 HIGHLIGHTS

A FULL WEEKEND CELEBRATING ITALIAN CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

Reflecting on our recent Italian Festival held on Saturday, March 2nd, we can’t help but smile at the incredible memories created on that beautiful, sun-kissed day. From the mesmerising performances by Tuscany’s talented flag throwers to the lively ambiance of our buzzing Italian wine tasting area, every moment was a celebration of Italian culture and hospitality. Our diverse array of vendors showcased the richness of Italian craftsmanship and cuisine, while our educational wine masterclasses added a delightful touch of sophistication and learning. With entertaining music artists serenading the crowds and delectable food tantalising taste buds, it’s no wonder the event was deemed a resounding success. This past festival truly embodied the essence of Italian charm!

2024 ITALIAN FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

FLAG THROWERS FROM AREZZO

This year Idiom partnered with the Italian Embassy, the Italian Consulate and the Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria to bring the ‘Sbandieratori d’Arezzo’ – the flag-wavers from Arezzo in southern Tuscany – to the Festival. The flag throwers were an absolute treat and their performances were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

ITALIAN WINE TASTINGS

The wine tasting area drew in a steady stream of enthusiasts eager to explore the diverse flavours of Italy’s renowned vineyards, in particular wines from the Tuscan region. Guests savoured every sip, immersing themselves in the bold reds and crisp whites that epitomise Tuscan winemaking excellence.

WINE MASTERCLASSES

Our wine masterclasses provided guests with an enriching journey through the heart of Tuscany, offering insightful explorations into the nuances and complexities of Italian winemaking. From delving into the effervescence of Prosecco to celebrating the centenary of Chianti Classico, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the storied heritage and evolution of these iconic varietals. Additionally, comparing Sangiovese wines from different regions offered a fascinating insight into the various methods of production of Italy’s most beloved grape. Led by Roberto & Pedro, these masterclasses were were an opportunity for wine enthusiasts to deepen their understanding and passion for Italian wine culture. 

LIVE MUSIC & KIDS ACTIVITIES

Our festival was alive with the vibrant sounds of both local and international acts. Francesca Biancoli, Daniel Estrada Belli & Anime del Sud, Tenor Peter Eukeba and Wicked World, ensured that attendees were thoroughly entertained from start to finish. While the adults enjoyed the musical festivities, children were kept happily engaged with a variety of activities, from whimsical face painting stations to interactive pizza-making classes and thrilling soccer penalty shootout competitions. It was a day filled with laughter, camaraderie, and endless fun, truly embodying the spirit of family-friendly celebration.

LIVE COOKING DEMOS & FOOD

Renowned Guest Chef Andrea Volpe, hailing from Tuscany, delighted audiences with a demonstration on crafting ‘Pappardelle al Cinghiale’—a quintessential Tuscan pasta dish featuring a wild boar ragu.
Guests indulged in an array of regional Italian street food offerings, ranging from savoury pecorino to succulent porchetta, as well pizza by Pizza Connection. Additionally, Idiom’s prepared exquisite Italian dishes.

ITALIAN DRINKS, DELI & APPAREL VENDORS

The Italian-themed stalls offered a diverse range of products including deli items, coffees, spritzers, books, sunglasses, ceramics, and more. Customers eagerly filled their shopping bags with these enticing treats, showcasing the popularity and appeal of Italian goods.

PLEASE NOTE SUNDAY 3 MARCH ITALIAN FESTIVAL CANCELLED

We regret to inform that we were forced to cancel the Italian Festival on the 3rd of March.
Extremely high winds overnight caused damage to the tent structures and the engineer’s certificates were no longer valid.
We could not compromise the safety of the guests or exhibitors.

All entrance tickets for Sunday 3 March are refundable on Webtickets.
