As a setting that captures the essence of the film, Universal Pictures selected Idiom Restaurant & Tasting Centre to host the South African preview of the international film You, Me and Tuscany. Set within its Italian-inspired building, Idiom delivered an immersive, experience-led event that brought the film’s essence to life through its distinctive Italian-South African identity.

Perched atop the Helderberg Mountain, Idiom – an Italian-South African family owned wine farm – is renowned for its spectacular setting, recently recognised for holding the ‘Best Panoramic View in Africa’ at the World Luxury Awards. Its architectural design, characterised by signature arches reminiscent of classic Italian structures, created a natural alignment with the film’s setting and narrative.

The day brought together Italian-South African fusion cuisine and culture through a series of interactive and sensory experiences. Guests began with a “Sip & Create” session, painting and sealing their own wooden cheese boards, before moving into a relaxed, chef-led cooking demonstration where fresh ingredients were transformed into bruschetta.

At the heart of the experience was a traditional Italian harvest table lunch – abundant with flavour and generosity – featuring Caprese skewers, freshly baked focaccia, puttanesca tortellini, San Daniele prosciutto, and truffle burrata, reflecting the richness of Idiom’s culinary offering. A vineyard and conservation tour with the Idiom team offered insight into the terroir, soil and varietals that define the wines, alongside the farm’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

The experience culminated in a wine tasting of Idiom’s Italian plantings on South African soil of Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Barbera and Zinfandel. These were paired with imported Italian meats and cheeses served on the charcuterie boards created earlier in the day, bringing the experience full circle.

“We were delighted to host Universal Pictures in bringing their international event to Idiom, and we believe this underscored the venue’s capacity to host considered, high-quality experiences” said Juan van der Westhuizen, General Manager. “We are proud to offer production companies and film crews the chance to explore Idiom’s offering, whether through bespoke events, curated tastings, safari and vineyard shoots or its distinctive culinary experiences.”
