For several years, Idiom has played host to cyclists and spectators during the highly regarded Absa Cape Epic, and in 2026 proudly served as Spectator Point 2 on one of the race’s most demanding and exhilarating stages.
Drawing a full house of spectators, Idiom has become a standout spectator destination along the route – even described by one rider as the “Alpe d’Huez of the Cape” thanks to its dramatic elevation and sweeping mountain vistas. Positioned on the slopes of the Helderberg, the estate offered guests a front-row seat to witness riders pushing through one of the race’s most challenging climbs.
As cyclists ascended the rugged terrain, spectators experienced the intensity and thrill of the race firsthand, watching competitors emerge against a breathtaking natural backdrop. The energy of the race extended beyond the route itself. Between key spectating moments, guests made their way to the Idiom Restaurant & Tasting Centre to enjoy curated wine tastings and a relaxed lunch, while others opted for a brief coffee stop before returning to the action.
Riders passing through the estate were able to refuel at the designated station, receiving refreshments as they continued their journey through the demanding course.
The event formed part of Stage 5 of the 2026 race, held on 20 March. Covering a distance of 134 kilometres with a total ascent of 2,750 metres, the stage began in Greyton and concluded in Stellenbosch. The route included key stops such as Idiom Wine Estate and Dornier Wine Estate, forming a critical segment of the day’s ride.
Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious mountain biking events in the world, the 2026 Absa Cape Epic spans an extraordinary 707 kilometres across the rugged terrain of the Western Cape. The race culminates in Stellenbosch, where riders complete their journey in a grand finale that celebrates endurance, resilience, and world-class athleticism.
As the Cape Epic website notes: “Every climb is a test, every descent a reward. This is a race where legends are made, and limits are shattered. Unpredictable. Unscripted. Untamed. This is the 2026 Absa Cape Epic route.”
Idiom’s continued involvement in the event underscores its position not only as a premier wine destination, but also as a landmark experience along one of the world’s greatest endurance races.
